WELCOME TO VISUAL CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART.
2012 is here and with it a series of new exhibitions at VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art. From 5th February , VISUAL will host local artist and acclaimed sculptor Eileen MacDonagh's large scale exhibition LithoSphere. MacDonagh was commissioned in 2008 through the Percent for Art Scheme to produce an external work for VISUAL; as a result the Medusa Tree was created. This impressive sculpture, blending the ancient symbol of a tree with contemporary fabrication, stops viewers in their tracks. MacDonagh has re-imagined this tree, not alone but within the family of a forest, filling the Main Gallery for her new exhibition. Throughout her career, MacDonagh has worked in stone from the miniature to the monumental, with a common thread continually apparent - her interest in geometric forms. This exhibition showcases a diverse range of sculpture by Macdonagh, much of which has never been shown in Irish galleries before.
The Lobby Gallery finds a new function this spring with The Glass Box Project, which will host artists, groups and researchers with the aim of opening up dialogues about art, culture and communities.
At VISUAL, we are delighted to continue our Community Exhibition Programme in 2012, starting with a photographic exhibition from Plan Ireland celebrating their 75th Anniversary, which demonstrates the important work this charity does supporting children in developing countries through a series of colourful and poignant photographs.
