Mend & Makedo Theatre Company presents the world premiere of an exciting new show on the life of the Irish Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. Shackleton was born just ten miles from Carlow and was inspired, as a child, by a stuffed penguin he found while on a visit to his cousins at Brownshill.
Music, featuring a six-piece band, is composed by Brian Hughes, one of the most highly regarded pipers/whistle players in Ireland; there are new songs from Mick Hanly, composer of Past the Point of Rescue and Crusader and a member of Moving Hearts. The script is written by John MacKenna, whose most recent collaboration with Leonard Cohen, Between Your Love and Mine, sold out two national tours, including the NCH. The show will be directed by Angela Keogh, who most recently directed The Mental; Letters in the Post and The Winter Dress for Mend & Makedo.
South! Always South is a combination of music and theatre and brings Shackleton's life, loves, adventures and death to the stage in a beautiful, uplifting and powerful evening.
