‘Take A Part Carlow’ is an ambitious participatory community art led initiative working in the Tullow Road area of Carlow Town. Our overarching aim is to make art in our local area, to include, empower and support the Tullow Road communities to build artistic capacity that in turn brings communities together. Take A Part Carlow aims to give a sense of place, belonging and local ownership and direct decision making from the ground up.
The ceramic pieces displayed at Visual Carlow as part of Culture Night 2019 were produced between June and September 2019. Take A Part Carlow worked with artist Clare Breen on Breadfellows chats which works by asking two people to work together with a piece of clay to create a vessel. Over five weeks the Take A Part Carlow group met at different people’s homes. The group learned how to work with clay to make everything from bowls, plates, cups, saucers and serving spoons and chatted, laughed and drank tea and ate biscuits along the way! These get togethers were captured through photographs and video, shared recipes and stories about favorite meals. This project is accompanied by a special publication documenting the project.
